Marie Harvey their choice for Outstanding Adult Learner

Marie, 46 from Birmingham, has eight children, five of whom suffer from  a range of physical and mental disabilities. She is a full time carer for her autistic son.

She had no encouragement in her youth for her education and had no support from her family. She is determined to be a good role model for her children through learning, and she gives them the support and encouragement she was denied.

Marie has achieved literacy and numeracy levels 1 and 2, and since Sept 07 has started a Btec First in Applied Science offered specifically to parents at her son’s school. She has volunteered her support to children in the school whose parents are unable or unwilling to engage in family learning activities.

Marie herself says of her learning: ‘ Once I started I could not stop – my brain kept working overtime! I wanted to keep learning. The more I did, the more I wanted to do.’ ‘ I will achieve as much as I can to help my children"  Nominated by Christine Smith of Four Dwellings High School.

Marie Teresa wins the SSAT National Learners' Week Award 2008
