Robert Galloway wins the Learning and Skills Council Learning at Work West Midlands Award
Robert spent much of his working life as an LGV Driver but suffered from health problems caused by excessive time behind the wheel. "I went back to college in 1999 after a very bad illness and found that I enjoyed studying", he says.
After taking computer courses and his GCSE in English in 2001, Robert completed an Access to Higher Education course and gained a place at the University of Worcester to study Archaeology, Heritage and History. Diagnosed with visual dyslexia, he realised that "I could make up the 30 years or so I had wasted in my life".
After Worcester, Robert went to the University of Birmingham/Ironbridge Institute to undertake a Postgraduate Diploma in Industrial Archaeology and his hard work paid off when he gained a full Masters in 2007.
His nominator stresses Robert's hard work and passion to succeed: "I have taught at Ironbridge for seven years and, before that, I was in adult education for 20 years. Robert is the most determined and worthy case I have ever come across for achievement in adult education."
Nominated by Dr Roger White of the University of Birmingham (Ironbridge Institute).
